The Illusion of Truth

Brittany Ruland

Gender bias penetrates every surface of our daily lives. My work focuses on and examines societal expectations, emphasizing the inequalities towards women created in advertisements. I analyze the subtle yet profound signs that big-name companies present in contemporary advertisements. These signs reinforce gender stereotypes and support patriarchal ideas that promote male dominance and control. The deeply ingrained gender stereotypes in advertising often suggest a woman’s worth is tied to appearance and submissiveness, while men are portrayed as dominant and authoritative.

My work uses layers of visual and conceptual illusions through mixed media and hidden messages, mirroring how media disguises biases. Engagement and touch are vital components of my project to uncover the hidden insights that call for a deeper reflection on the societal norms. By requiring a continuous search for meaning, I strive to cultivate a critical awareness of the gender biases presented by these advertising companies.

It is crucial to question the current status quo, actively recognize the manipulations, and look beyond the image to uncover more profound truths. Understanding these manipulations is essential to reshaping the narratives that define a woman's identity and worth. Doing so can empower a generation to embrace their true potential.
