Scriptural Design

Courtney Meyer

Over the course of history, the visual arrangement of Judeo-Christian Biblical scriptures has undergone significant changes and adaptations. These visual transformations within scripture have traces of design everywhere, including visual layout, formatting, imagery, typography, hierarchy and more. These changes are entirely rooted in fundamental and modern design principles such as semiotic theories, typography standards, and basic design principles. Yet today many modern individuals still find these scriptures challenging to read or engage with because of their complex visual structures. Scriptural Design explores how graphic design, and historical analysis can effectively modernize the visual layout and typography standards of Judeo-Christian Biblical texts, to reintroduce them to a contemporary audience, encouraging engagement.

Being a graphic designer as well as a lifelong Christian I have seen the discourse within the visual layout and design of scripture. During my design studies I have become convinced that this discourse can be resolved by providing a redesigned visual of scripture.

With the understanding of design, these difficult visual structures can be brought into a more modern and appealing layout, all with the intention for various kinds of contemporary individuals, secular, religious or Christian, to interact with scripture in a more engaging way.

Scriptural Design shares a scriptural analysis which delves into the visual progression of scripture throughout history focusing on the material and design histories of scripture. Then utilizing the foundations of design while respecting the sacredness of the biblical scriptures, I have taken a single book of the bible (the Gospel of Mark) and restructured its layout. By making improvements to the typography, the typesetting, the hierarchy, adding impactful imagery and other formatting, I have created a new visual design layout for scriptural texts. Thus, I have provided an option for the scriptures that can resonate and engage modern audiences, further providing conversation for the convergence of design and faith.
