EXISTIMOS

Bambi Hernandez

My experiences of displacement are rooted in my identity as a queer Texas-born Latina. Growing up in an oppressive household marked by a toxic culture and overbearing religion, I desperately wished to see a piece of me expressed on television or in art. Instead, I received crumbs. The lack of representation drove me into a state of 'social starvation,' a feeling of isolation and hunger for connection, which now fuels my drive to curate work centered on inclusivity. Having found a supportive community, I now celebrate that acceptance through my art.

My ceramic sculptures are a direct response to my internal conflicts—striving to be Mexican enough for Mexicans, American enough for Americans, and queer enough for Western queer culture. The pressure to be the 'perfect' daughter also left me feeling inadequate; however, I reject the notion of perfection and the expectations imposed by society. Rather than discarding the imperfections in my pieces, I embrace them, expressing the diversity of my experiences through color and mixed mediums while honoring the repaired elements in my creations.

Large and assertive, like graffiti, my sculptures unapologetically occupy space. In this declaration of my existence, I confront the stereotypes that shape the public’s perception of me. Each letter in my EXISTIMOS series serves as a commentary on the diversity and strength of my community. I challenge viewers to see beyond stereotypes, experience the full spectrum of identities within the LGBTQIA+, and find a piece of themselves in that perspective.
