50/50 by 2050 is a macroscale installation that exemplifies a miniature model of a Regional Transportation District (RTD) station, illustrating the transformative potential of guerrilla gardening in advocating for carbon neutrality. 50/50 By 2050 integrates greenery into miniature light rail systems, stations, and bus stops, symbolizing the fusion of nature with urban infrastructure. Over the last century, the global temperature has increased by an average of 0.5–1.0°C as a direct consequence of increasing anthropogenic carbon emission into the atmosphere. Studies have shown that specific plants in urban environments evolve over time in response to carbon emissions.

Spread across the city of Denver to contribute to a cleaner, greener urban environment, I demonstrate the photosynthetic power of these plants by leveraging local transportation networks. My focus is on utilizing Denver’s RTD as a canvas for guerrilla gardening, proposing a vision of a carbon-neutral Denver by the year 2050. By merging guerrilla marketing tactics with guerrilla gardening, this work addresses pressing environmental concerns such as elevated carbon emissions and urban air pollution.

Through my research, I aim to explore how the integration of plant life into public spaces can actively reduce our carbon footprint and advance the cause of carbon neutrality.

50/50 By 2050 spreads across light rails, stations, and buses to serve as a realistic portrayal of the profound impact such environmental interventions can have. The project demonstrates how guerrilla gardening can reframe our understanding of urban spaces, encouraging a new relationship between architecture and nature that is central to the field of Environmental Graphic Design (EGD). 50/50 By 2050 demonstrates to viewers to reconsider their perceptions of climate change, illustrating how guerrilla gardening can serve as a catalyst for the environment.
