Counting Days
Jessica Morcom
The day I received my refusal letter from the insurance company is a day I will never
forget. They wouldn’t be approving the new medication that had been doing wonders for others
suffering from migraines just like me. I wasn’t sick enough to take the new medication. My life
hadn’t been affected enough to take the new medication. I wasn’t dying enough to take the new
medication. When we look at you, we don’t see anything wrong with you.
Prove you are in pain.
Someone I had never met was deciding what my quality of life was worth. Someone was
deciding what I was worth based on some doctors notes and monetary value. So, I ripped up the
letter and reformed it into proof of each day I had endured fighting the intangible. This was my
“proof.” Everyday is measured. A body grows from the pain that wasn’t seen before and from
the illness the insurances ignored.
