A Visual Memoir: Family
Barbara Uzcategui Luna
A Visual Memoir: Family documents my Venezuelan heritage through a series of family photographs captured on film. Using pre-existing photographs in collaboration with my family alongside my own images, I preserve everyday moments in natural, unstaged lighting, highlighting the imperfections and authenticity of family life.
The images are presented in a handmade, bound album, offering a tactile and intimate viewing experience. A Visual Memoir: Family is built upon the gradually vanishing tradition of the family album, a relic made up of familial relationships and gatherings.
A rustic wooden pedestal supports the album, reinforcing themes of history and resilience. The weathered wood mirrors the intricacies of family, its imperfections, like the knots and grains, represent the unique character and individuality of family members. Additionally, projections extend the photographs beyond the album, creating an immersive space for reflection and immersion.
By integrating analog photography, vernacular imagery, and physical presentation, A Visual Memoir: Family explores the relationship between personal memory and collective experience. Making this project a testament to the enduring power of family, memory, and the photographic medium.
